Raise Awareness in Your Community Regarding the Harms of EC

It's important to remember to speak out against emergency contraception in your community.  Powerful activist groups have been promoting EC heavily as the premier solution to abortion and unplanned pregnancy.  But, EC is not safe for women's or teen girls' health! These powerful groups have even pressured stores such as the Wal-Mart chain to distribute the drug when they previously did not.

A boycott of the organizations that promote EC and the retailers that distribute it is an effective way to bring public awareness to the potential harms of EC.  For example, the state of New Hampshire recently voted down a measure to require parental consent for EC prescriptions.  This means that any girl can obtain the drugs without her parent's knowledge!

Here are some ways to get involved:

  • write to the executive offices of the retailers expressing your disproval with their decision to stock the drug (and all hormonal and barrier contraceptives for that matter).
  • find which stores in your town (chains and independent stores) and publicize this information, urging people to write to them to express disproval.
  • write letter to the editor of the paper calling pharmacists and retailers to responsibility.
  • stage demonstrations.
  • educate your neighbors of the harms of Plan B- see this recent article from Population Research Institute- click [here].
  • “sidewalk counseling” at pharmacies giving out information on the harms of birth control and the effectiveness of NFP.
  • if you own stock in one of these corporations, contact them to express your outrage about distributing emergency contraception.
