The prevailing perception regarding contraception is that it offers almost perfect protection against pregnancy and disease. It's also a common belief that hormonal contraceptives, such as the pill, pose little or no danger to women. Both of these perceptions are far from the truth.

Breast Cancer and Oral Contraception - Over the past two decades, multiple analyses and studies have provided convincing evidence that using oral contraceptives increases the risk of breast cancer. The evidence keeps mounting -- separate studies published in the January 2006 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, the October 2006 edition of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention, and the October 2006 edition of Mayo Clinic Proceedings confirm the increased risk.Read more...

Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch: 1,000 Claimants and Counting Print E-mail

According to Johnson & Johnson's third quarter SEC filing for 2006 , there are over “1,000 claimants who have filed lawsuits or have made claims regarding injuries allegedly due to Ortho Evra.” [1] Ortho Evra, also known as the birth control patch, is a transdermal hormonal contraceptive which is applied weekly to the skin. In addition to being a contraceptive, the patch can act as an abortifacient by preventing implantation of a fertilized egg.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is an annual campaign to build public awareness about the disease as well as to raise funds for research.

What does this educational campaign have to do with contraception? It has to do with the fact that many types of oral contraceptives contain synthetic estrogen, a steroid believed to have a  role in the development of breast cancer.[1]

You Don't Have to be Christian to be Against Birth Control

A recent New York Times Magazine article, "Contra-Contraception" by Russell Shorto [1], highlighted the growing trend against the use of artificial contraception by Christians and the growing number of anti-abortion (pro-life) groups that are addressing the issue. Though he brought to light many aspects of negative impacts of contraception, Shorto's article avoided many important points regarding the harms of artificial birth control on marriage, society and women's health. It served more as a forum to mock the anti-contraception movement.
